By Edward DeVita and Michael MacEachern Published: Friday, February 29, 2008 Allie John, Nicole Mula and Kim Caltagirone all tallied a college-record five goals as the Savannah College of Art and Design women’s lacrosse team earned a 26-3 victory over Kennesaw State University Feb. 23 at the SCAD Athletics Complex. Amy Hedgepeth and Rachel Johnson scored four and three goals, respectively. Nicole Burns added two, and Cristina Driver and Allison Trimbell chipped in one apiece. Goalie Kelly Bignell recorded five saves. Temple hits three homers against Seahawks Pitcher Meghan Temple hit three home runs against Northwood College as the softball team split a Florida Sun Conference doubleheader Feb. 24 at the Paulson Softball Complex. The Seahawks won the opener 6-2 before the Bees rallied for a 7-0 shutout in the nightcap. The Bees, who are ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. During the second game, Kristen Curette batted a solo home run. Temple hit a three-run homer, and SCAD added another run on an RBI single by Brittany Kelley. Kelley later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Temple hit her second homer of the game. On the mound, she scattered three hits and struck out three over five innings. Temple hit her first home run of the day during the opener. Men’s basketball hosts first round in tournament Edward Waters College defeated the Bees in a quarterfinal contest at the 2008 Florida Sun Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament Feb. 26 in Savannah. SCAD, which was seeded No. 4, ended its season at 14-17. The Bees took the lead twice during the first half — on a three-point play by Chas Johnson and a Ron Kus jumper — but the Tigers seized control right before halftime and held on. Eze Andrews finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds in his final SCAD game. Xavier Blain-Cruz tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Kus added nine points, and Tim Stammen registered nine rebounds. Stammen and Blain-Cruz combined for 35 points as SCAD ended the regular season with a 67-56 Florida Sun victory over Webber International University Feb. 23 in Babson Park, Fla. The Bees also defeated Edward Waters College 81-74 Feb. 20. Stammen led the Bees with 20 points and six rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. Blain-Cruz finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kevin Polit and Kus each racked up eight points, while Andrews tallied eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Johnson scored seven points and recorded six assists. Women’s tennis claims FSC title The No. 5-ranked women’s tennis team won its third consecutive Florida Sun title when it defeated Northwood 6-3 Feb. 24 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Bees improved to 6-0 and concluded their FSC schedule with a perfect 5-0 record for the third consecutive year. SCAD also defeated No. 8 Embry-Riddle University 6-3 Feb. 23 and St. Thomas University 9-0 Feb. 22. Men’s tennis finishes second in conference The men’s tennis team returned to the win column with a 9-0 Florida Sun victory over Northwood Feb. 24 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.The Bees, who are ranked No. 5 in the NAIA, are 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. SCAD also lost 9-0 to Embry-Riddle Feb. 23 and defeated St. Thomas 9-0 Feb. 22. Men’s golf finishes third at tournament The men’s golf team finished in third place at the Thomas University Winter Invitational Feb. 25 in Valdosta. The Bees shot a second-round 294 on the par-72 layout at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, finishing the 36-hole event at 598. Tom Hayes earned his third all-tournament nod in six collegiate events and tied for fifth place at 145, after shooting a final-round 73. Scott Melton shot 147 after firing a 74. Colin Kelly (second-round 73) and Andrew Herbert (second-round 74) finished at 153. Mika Becktor completed the tournament at 155 after shooting a 74 in the final round. Men’s lacrosse snaps losing streak John Healy and Stewart Yost each scored three goals, helping the No. 9-ranked Bees defeat Kennesaw State 20-2 in a Southeast Lacrosse Conference men’s lacrosse match Feb. 23 at the SCAD Athletics Complex. The Bees improved to 3-4. A.J. Getz, Eric Willenson, Joe Magnello and E.A. Spencer Gray each tallied a goal for SCAD. Yost, Gray, Kyle Merrill, Charles Pate and Erik Elmquist registered assists as the Bees snapped their three-game losing streak. Kenan Degirmenci recorded 10 saves in goal. Sullivan hits two home runs SCAD and Embry-Riddle split a Florida Sun baseball doubleheader Feb. 23 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Eagles defeated the Bees 10-2 in the opener, and SCAD won the nightcap 3-2, snapping a four-game losing streak and improving to 13-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Richard Sullivan hit homers in both games, and entered the nightcap with a .077 batting average (1-for-13). Seth Carswell and Matt Cox stroked back-to-back two-out RBI singles during the nightcap. Reliever Adam Honeycutt recorded his fifth save of 2008 after pitching three scoreless innings to preserve the win for Adam Miller (3-1). Jeff Mullikin (3-1) pitched the opener. Women’s basketball players earn conference honors Three women’s basketball players — Katie Stover, Dakota Whitney and Janay Wilson — were named to the All-Florida Sun Conference second team Feb. 22 at an awards brunch held in Babson Park, Fla. Wilson also earned the conference’s Freshman of the Year accolade, while teammate Brittany Carter was recognized as the league’s Champion of Character Award winner. Stover led the Bees in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg), despite missing eight games due to a leg injury. She has scored 252 points, pulled down 153 rebounds and shot 50.5 percent (16-of-210) this season. Whitney, the conference’s 2005 Freshman of the Year, was selected to the all-conference team for the third consecutive season. She holds the college’s all-time assists (356) and steals (209) records and is ranked 10th in NAIA Division II for assists per game with 5.423. She has averaged 7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while tallying a total of 141 assists and 63 steals. Wilson is No. 3 in NAIA Division II in steals per game (3.929) and 26th in assists per game (1.679). She has averaged 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and has registered 134 assists and 110 steals. The Champion of Character Award is based on academics and core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Carter, who has a 3.87 cumulative grade point average as a sound design major, has led the Bees in their participation in the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society Buddy Walk Festival each fall and also is involved in the Bees’ endeavors to help students read at East Broad Elementary School. Fencing earns silver Charles Lee Henshaw won two silver medals — one in epee and one in foil — for the Bees at the Musketeer Open Feb. 23 in Columbia, S.C. DeVita is director of community involvement for the athletics department, and MacEachern is sports information director. |
